What is in coffee grounds that make them an option for exfoliating the skin?


The key components of coffee grounds that can benefit the skin are caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and niacin.


Caffeine and antioxidants such as niacin have been shown to reduce vascular congestion and reduce inflammation.


Chlorogenic acid is a phenolic compound with known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can benefit the skin.



How are coffee grounds used to scrub or exfoliate the skin?



Coffee scrubs can be very effective in gently providing physical exfoliation of the skin making it appear brighter and reducing redness and inflammation.


To use coffee grounds to exfoliate mix equal parts coffee grounds to brown sugar. Starting with 1/4 cup of each is reasonable. Then mix in either lemon juice or coconut oil to create a paste with the desired consistency to even apply to the skin.

These ingredients are generally considered safe for the skin.



How often can a coffee scrub be used?



In general, facial scrubs of this nature should be limited to once or twice weekly to avoid over exfoliating the skin.



Why coffee is good for the skin?



Coffee in moderation is not bad for your skin. Caffeine initially can benefit your skin but in excess can cause dehydration.
