What can you share about the trend of facial exercises?

Facial exercises also referred to as facial yoga, has been a growing trend. They are thought to assist in facial rejuvenation. Similar to yoga for other muscle groups, the goal is to strengthen underlying muscle groups to improve the appearance of the skin. Some limited studies have been performed that seem to support the use of facial yoga to strengthen facial muscles which results in a more youthful appearance.

Consider that aging of the lower face is made up of a combination of loss of volume and thinning of the skin. Strengthening the muscles of the face, can increase or hypertrophy the muscle to add to the facial volume.

Who might benefit from implementing this practice and what results should they expect?

Facial yoga is predominantly effective for mid and lower-face rejuvenation. I would consider patients that are seeking volume along the cheeks, nasolabial folds, and jawline as having the potential to benefit.

Conversely, who might not benefit from facial yoga?

For those that are most concerned about upper face/ forehead wrinkles, this practice may not produce the results you are seeking. The forehead wrinkles can be potentially accentuated or worsened by strengthening the muscles that underly them.

If you're pro facial exercise, what would you say people need to know about it to start their own practice at home?

Focus on the mid-face first as strengthening and firming the mid-face can result in some improvement to the lower face incidentally. When focusing on the jawline or lower face exercises, the masseter muscle can sometimes hypertrophy or thicken changing the contour of the face slightly.

What are the most common facial exercises?

In a study by Alam et al, participants performed facial exercises for 30 minutes daily for 8 weeks followed by 30 minutes every other day from weeks 9 through 20. 32 exercises each for about one minute were performed. The exercises referenced were not outlined in the article however it appears that they were developed by Gary Sikorski of Happy Face Yoga. If you are interested in the full list of exercises and demonstrations, please take a look at this website. Below are the exercises that have been referenced in articles as a glimpse into the types of exercises to consider.

This study demonstrated benefits in facial toning that improved the overall appearance of the participants.
