Lip Masks

A lip mask is intended to hydrate the skin while serving as a barrier to protect the skin and allow the ingredients to work. Balms tend to be occlusive and serve as a barrier but may not have enough hydrating ingredients to serve the purpose of adding moisture. An ointment will offer hydration but may not last long enough on the skin to really deliver long-lasting results. Sheet masks are ideal for use over a short window of time, such as 15 to 20 minutes to offer hydration. They can be a bit awkward for routine use. Read more...

What is a mask in cosmetic terms?

In cosmetic terms, a mask is a product meant to be occlusive for a period of time along with ingredients designed to treat or address a particular skin challenge. The goal is to create a “seal” to allow ingredients to penetrate into the skin for a benefit.

What is a lip mask?

Lip masks are no different in that the goal is to seal in hydrating and healing ingredients to allow the delicate skin of the lips to benefit. The window of time that lips can really benefit from a mask is overnight for a lengthy window of time to work.

What do lip masks contain?

Most lip masks will have occlusive ingredients such as petrolatum and/or beeswax along with hydrating ingredients such as various oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, and panthenol. There are likely going to be ingredients intended to draw moisture to the skin called humectants such as sugars. Honey and shea butter can serve as humectants and also have occlusive properties.

What is the best consistency to try for a lip mask?

Given the types of ingredients in lip masks, they should have a balm-like consistency that is soft enough to spread like a moisturizer. Lip masks will likely come in a jar with an applicator as they will likely be too thick to squeeze through a tube and too soft or gel-like to come in a stick form.

The types of ingredients found in lip masks are not inherently pricey ingredients and should not be too costly. These should be affordable for routine use.

Is it better to seek a lip mask in a jar or a tube?

Lip masks that come in jars are easier to apply and less likely to be wasted as the product will hopefully not be trapped in the tube and difficult to extract. Tubes tend to be more sanitary with fewer chances for microbial contamination. Bear in mind freshness once the product is opened and be sure to use it within a window of time dictated by the freshness listed on the package. Using applicators is helpful as well as remembering to clean these applicators routinely.

What is the best way to use a lip mask?

Ideal lip mask usage depends on the type of product chosen. Although some consider performing a lip scrub first, I tend to recommend simply applying the mask without the scrub. Once the lips are exfoliated they can feel sensitive or raw and denuded and require healing. There may be some slight oozing from these areas that make it difficult for the lip mask to stay attached or make it feel uncomfortable. Our skin is naturally exfoliating routinely and simply applying the mask without the scrub will achieve a similar result without the discomfort. The chapped areas of skin will shed when ready because the skin underneath is healed and ready to shed.

I prefer overnight lip masks simply because many of my patients tend to sleep with their mouths open or slightly ajar from nasal congestion, mouth guards, or other reasons. This only further dries out the lips. By applying overnight there is the benefit of both hydrating the lips while also serving as an occlusive to reduce the tendency towards further dryness.

Are there any ingredients to avoid in lip masks?

Watch out for menthol or mint-like flavors or feels. These are often added to lip products to make them tingle when applied but can unfortunately add to some skin irritation.
