How is rose added to skincare?
Rose has many sources in skin care. It can come from rose petal extract, rosehip oil extracted from the seeds, or rosewater made from a byproduct of creating rose oil. It has been used for centuries for its fragrance and medicinal qualities. Modern research has confirmed its benefits as anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-acne properties in particular. Rose as an essential oil can be found in moisturizers and anti-inflammatory products, in particular for acne.

What is rosehip oil?
Rosehip oil has garnered a lot of attention in recent years. It’s one of few botanical compounds that has been studied and shown to have efficacy in wound healing and as an anti-inflammatory. In a study on its effects in wound healing, it was shown to accelerate and promote wound healing and improve the appearance of scars. It has essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. The fatty acids likely give it its hydrating qualities to improve the appearance of fine lines.
I find that when it comes to botanicals they are touted for a lot of uses- wrinkles, dark spots, dark circles, etc. Rosehip oil does have strong anti-inflammatory properties to likely improve the appearance of the skin and help with hydration. I could not find studies to support its effectiveness in treating discoloration of the skin.
A little goes a long way! Apply 2-3 drops to the area to be treated on a daily basis and gently rub it in. Using high volumes of it will not necessarily provide better results!

What is rosewater?
Rosewater is a common ingredient for facial toners. It seems to retain its anti-inflammatory and anti-acne qualities making it simple to add to a skincare routine looking to treat or prevent acne without overdrying the skin.
What are some common products that contain rose?
L’Oreal Hydra Fresh Toner Not everyone needs to use a toner, especially since most cleansers these days are effective at pH-balancing the skin. However, the ‘new age’ toners are less alcohol or astringent based and can help hydrate the skin instead of overdrying it. The rose water in this toner helps make it less irritating on your skin. Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay
This facial mask is in the hydrating mask category. It soothes the skin and is less likely to trigger acne or breakouts given the anti-acne benefits of rose extracts. Ouai Rose Hair and Body Oil This hair and body oil contain rosehip oil which feels a little heavier. Although this product can feel a bit oily or greasy, it can work really well to restore moisture to otherwise dry hair. True rosehip oil is an Amber color with a smooth consistency. Not too greasy, not too liquidy. It applies easily.

Can I use Rosehip Oil after microneedling?
Ideally, it is best to avoid oily, thick, or heavy products in the first 24 to 48 hours after microneedling. These products can settle into the microchannels created by microneedling and risk triggering acne and/or milia. Use lightweight products such as hyaluronic acid after microneedling to avoid this issue.
