What are the main benefits of using peptides skincare products for anti-aging?

Often times products that claim to be firming creams will also include peptides. Peptides are the amino acid building blocks for collagen and other structural molecules in the skin. In skincare products, peptides are thought to primarily work as signaling molecules to ultimately stimulate collagen production and elastin proliferation. There are peptides used in products and in studies that can work as carrier peptides to help deliver vital nutrients to the skin, neurotransmitter inhibitor peptides to reduce muscular contractions, peptides that inhibit enzymes such as ones that break down collagen, and others that are structural.

Can peptides impact collagen production and help prevent/ treat sagging skin?

The goal with each of these products is a thickening of the skin with added tone. Skin peptides make a lot of unregulated claims with regard to skincare benefits. It is very difficult to acknowledge their claims given the lack of studies supporting them. However, these products tend to give the skin added hydration and improve its overall appearance. There also may be something to the potential anti-inflammatory effects of peptides.

How much product would you recommend using, and when?

Most peptide-containing skincare products come as a serum or cream. Only a few drops for serums or less than a pea size amount for cream is needed for the face. This should be used after a cleanser and before a moisturizer.
